Ramblings

What in the world is this?!?!

From CHR Broadway... Ever head of the Macavity Award? As it turns out it is named after TS Eliot's Mystery Cat, and it is an award that is given out annually to four different mystery novels that are chosen by the Mystery Reader's International. Cool, huh?

CATS Cast Changes
Strange, I'll admit. These are my opinions of who would be who if the characters from CATS were combined with other musicals. These are based on appearances, relations, and/or personalities; not by singing or dancing ability. If you would like to submit any lists you may have I would be glad to put them up. Also, in some lists not all the characters may be present because I may not have seen the shows enough to know their characters very well. These are only my opinions, and I don't want to offend anyone.

Check out this portion of sheetmusic for the song Macavity...apparently Mungojerrie and Griddlebone weren't always the only ones who worked for him.

Lot of Unknowns
What's the deal here? In this cast photo from London 1993 there seem to be a few cats/kittens who aren't usually there. All the other characters are accounted for. Are they just some extra chorus members? Have a look.

A hilarious pic relayed to me via Ms. Magisifo: "misto looks liek hes gonna barf, tugger is looking off camera, jemima looks like shes a lush, cetty looks hyper, and plato looks dumbfounded". Visit her site via Links (Ms. Magisifo's Jellicle Jamboree)

Information related to me via Mr. Mistoffelees:
"Just a note, Drew and Jo WERE dubbed at one particular spot in the video. When they FIRST appear in their song, they laugh. Those laughs (and shh sounds) are dubbed, hence, you get them listed as dubbed in the credits. (Don't ask me why Jo's laugh  or Drew's shushing wasn't "good" enough, I don't have all the answers, just the one). Indeed, they were dubbed, but only on that spot."

Why do girls in musical theatre have all the good songs? Heck, Memory...Macavity...need I say more?

Has anyone else noticed that the chorus music for Mistoffelees is nearly identical to that of Journey to the Heaviside Layer? Try it...listen to Journey of the Heaviside Layer and sing the "Oh well" verse to it. It fits! Coincedence? Or is it an indicator that something else is a little special about that magical cat...? It works vice versa, as well.

So many people have stated that Tugger's spots are those of a leopard, but they're not! From all the productions I've seen, the spots more closely resemble jaguars, because leopard spots don't have the circles around them.

Uh oh! A video blooper! It's a little hard to see, but it looks like a crewmember's arm stuck in the picture while he/she holds a camera. I haven't seen this one anywhere else yet...and there is another one on Mistoffelees's song. When Jacob Brent whirls around to say "Presto!" you can see someone standing on the entire right side of the screen! Check the video if you can't see it well here. (The Old Gumbie Cat)

Who is it that lays with Tugger after the Mating Dance on the CATS Video? Jennyanydots! Who would have thought...?!?

The Madness
A veterinarian called Demona Callery from an RPG I am on (The Change), is a human caught in the midst of all these actors changed into their CATS characters...and they're all stricken with some kind of insanity. Here are "her" attempts to document it.

They should re-make the CATS video as the Broadway version. They re-made Jesus Christ Superstar, didn't they? I'll tell you one thing, though: they should NOT have used Glenn Carter and they SHOULD have used Tony Vincent as Judas. (Regarding the JCS video: the emotions were there, but the vocals very disappointing.)

CATS Picture Game
Get it right and you could win an award!

I have a confession to make. I know I'm contradicting myself, here, but I'll say it anyway. Yeah, I write a lot of CATS stories fur fun. I think it's great! But in the show the plot is thin and the characters don't have definate relationships. Writing out stories and making definate bloodlines and plots seems to take away that imaginative and mystical air about CATS that I love, and I think other poeple do, as well. I'll keep writing...I just wanted to point that out.

One of the neatest things about CATS, I think, is that there's no chorus. No ensemble. (Well, if ya don't count the CATS Chorus, I really dunno what exactly they do). Think about it: everyone on that stage is a distinct character, has their own name, appearance, and personality. No one is some faceless background dancer or chorus singer...talk about equality. =)

Now I know that Australia must really be "down under!" I don't know if it rings true with all casts, but in the pictures I've seen of the Australian Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer, their famous two-person pose is going the opposite direction than in other productions!

Alright, that does it! Now I'm firmly convinced the fans could put together an entire recording and video of a CATS production better than those suits over in RUG! (No offense, ALW, I'm just ticked.) I was cruising through a music store when I picked up a Selections of Broadway tape, and...oh, yeah, it had CATS songs on it...but tell me: am I missing out on something or has Macavity been cast as a new character with a new song "MACAVITY THE THEATRE CAT"? Jeez, you'd think those tape-makers would pay a little attention. Another CD I have of medleys features "Shimbleshanks". >:(

A Jellicle Game
Trust me, it's harder than it looks!

Femi Taylor, who plays Exotica on the CATS video and was the original Tantomile in London, also had a part in the Star Wars Trilogy. She played an ill-fated alien slave girl to Jabba the Hutt...Oola or something was her name. I like Star Wars, but I think I'm a bit more of a Trekkie.

It's now apparent that musicals get around! On the gameshow Who Wants to be a Millionaire? they had a celebrity episode, and the man who plays Fox Mulder from the X-Files (David something) got a question about CATS. The question was: Which character does not appear in the musical CATS? The options were Grizabella, Rum Tum Tugger, Skimbleshanks, and Sassafras. He got it right, too!

Macavity
For a school assignment once, we had to take something simple or small and describe it thoroughly, and you know me: love to write and love CATS! So here's what I turned in. Gotta 110 on it, too. Teacher's favorite. =) It's a short scene from the performance.
